In the 1880s, decades before the “Great Migration”, two Black families from Charlottesville, Virginia traveled thousands of miles west to start new lives in the Pacific Northwest. Generations later, descendants of these Black Pioneers are eager for their stories to be remembered and shared.

Stephanie Johnson-Tolliver is President of the Black Heritage Society of Washington State where she lead sand oversees the largest public archive of memorabilia that documents the lives and legacies of African Americans throughout Washington State.

 
 

William Bell is a junior Marketing and Advertising Major at the University of North Texas.
